Farm Management Canada and the Alberta Wheat Commission align to cultivate farm business management excellence
April 13, 2018 – Ottawa, ON
The Alberta Wheat Commission (AWC) and Farm Management Canada (FMC) are excited to announce they have formed a strategic alliance to support the provision of farm business management resources and learning opportunities to Alberta’s wheat producers. This relationship will launch with AWC investing $15 000 into Farm Management Canada’s programming.
FMC will work with AWC to provide, promote, and share information, resources, and educational programming focused on fostering farm business management excellence, while exchanging industry insights and best practices in knowledge transfer to address the lifelong learning needs and opportunities for Alberta’s growers.
“Farm business is inherently entrepreneurial,” says Kevin Bender, AWC Chair. “Our alliance with FMC is aimed at giving farmers better access to management tools that can help bolster their overall business performance and in-turn increase profitability.”
According to the FAO, over the next 30 years, farmers must produce 70% more food to feed 9 billion people around the world. Further, Canada has set an ambitious target for agriculture to become Canada’s key economic driver, moving from the world’s 5th to 2nd largest exporter, increasing exports by $20 billion by 2025. We must empower farmers with the capacity to succeed for today, and generations to come. This signals an immense opportunity to grow the sector’s competitiveness by investing in farm business management.
“Now more than ever, our competitive advantage will come from the business skills and practices of our farmers,” says Heather Watson, Executive Director of Farm Management Canada. “We must work together to empower our farmers with the programming and resources they need to stay on the leading edge. Where it is so easy for stakeholder groups to work in silos, we’re thrilled that the Alberta Wheat Commission has decided to work together to leverage our resources to increase our reach and impact. We hope others will follow in this collaborative approach.”
The Alberta Wheat Commission is a producer-directed organization dedicated to improving the long-term profitability of Alberta’s 14,000 wheat producers.
Farm Management Canada, founded in 1992, is the only national organization dedicated exclusively to connecting diverse stakeholder groups and providing resources to enable Canadian farmers to make sound management decisions. FMC partners with industry stakeholders including governments, public and private sector organizations, and farm and commodity associations to promote and foster the development of excellence in Canada’s agricultural sector.
